Precise 3D with Space Mouse Pro

Testing the 3D Connexion SpaceMouse in Unreal Engine

The real test came when I integrated the SpaceMouse into my workflow for animated movie Max Beyond ( https://amzn.to/41xRRb2  ) in Unreal Engine.

Although this was tested in UE 4.26, its still applicable in UE 5.

Here’s what I found:

1. Enhanced Camera Control & Cinematic Framing

One of the biggest advantages of using the SpaceMouse is how seamlessly I can navigate through Unreal Engine’s 3D space. The 6DoF sensor allows me to pan, zoom, orbit, and tilt my camera with natural, fluid movements, making it feel like I'm physically directing a camera in a virtual set.

When setting up cinematic shots, the ability to experiment with angles, adjust framing, and plan out dynamic camera moves became incredibly intuitive. Compared to traditional navigation methods, the SpaceMouse significantly reduces the time spent setting up complex shots.

2. Precision Object & Lighting Adjustments

Placing 3D objects, characters, and props with pixel-perfect precision is essential in creating realistic scenes. The SpaceMouse excels at fine adjustments, allowing me to position assets with micro-movements, which is particularly useful when working on detailed environments.

Additionally, adjusting lighting became far more intuitive. I could tweak light intensity, color, and positioning in real time, locking in values and quickly switching between different light sources at the press of a button.

3. Customizing Controls for a Personalized Workflow

To truly maximize efficiency, I spent some time adjusting the navigation settings in the 3Dconnexion Properties Utility. By modifying speed, rotation, and zoom sensitivity, I was able to tailor the SpaceMouse to fit my exact workflow needs.

Pro Tip: If you're using the SpaceMouse for the first time, take the time to fine-tune these settings to match your preferences—you’ll notice a huge difference in usability!

4. Capturing Cinematic Camera Moves in Sequencer

One of the most exciting discoveries was using the Unreal Engine Sequencer to record smooth camera movements directly from the SpaceMouse. Unlike traditional keyframe animation, the SpaceMouse allows for real-time camera motion capture, translating my hand movements into natural, fluid camera animations.

This makes previsualization and animation blocking incredibly fast, allowing me to sculpt motion in real-time rather than setting keyframes manually.

Final Thoughts: Is the 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Worth It?

Without a doubt, YES. The 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse is a must-have tool for 3D artists, game developers, and filmmakers working in Unreal Engine, Maya, Blender, and other 3D software.

The precision control, intuitive navigation, and customizable workflow enhancements make it an essential accessory for anyone looking to improve their 3D workflow.
